Helping Others

I want to help a loved one

One in three women will become a victim of abuse in her lifetime.

At some point, nearly all of us know someone affected by domestic abuse, regardless of race, ethnicity or income. Often, victims of domestic abuse are in desperate need of shelter. But how can you help your friend? There are a lot of things you can do to help, but it’s important to remember that they may have a different view of what’s happening than you. They may stay in that relationship and, if they do, try to be there for them through it all. They will need you as a friend and confidant. If and when they choose to leave the relationship, they’ll need you still as it can be sad and lonely for them even though it was an abusive relationship.

Remember that even when you feel like there’s nothing you can do, just listening and acknowledging their feelings is already a very helpful step. If you have a friend who is in an abusive relationship and you’re not sure how to help, contact our office to find out where to turn and how to help.
